Using Black Lights For Atmosphere In A Laser Tag Arena

April 12, 2012

Many entertainment centers offer a variety of games for customers to play in an environment that is fun and unique. One way that these gaming centers distinguish individual rooms is through the use of black lights. These lights are usually invisible to the naked eye when they are active and can only be seen when the light is interacting with certain materials such as a fluorescent dye painted on a wall or piece of clothing. Black lights create an atmosphere that is unlike anything that is commonly seen in nature. The lighting effects that are orchestrated are often paired with surreal games or are used during late night events so that bright traditional lights are not needed.A black light emits ultraviolet light instead of visible light. The light often has a very faint purple flow near the bulb that then disappears in the air. The purpose of using a black light in an entertainment center is to make fluorescent substances visible. A fluorescent substance such as treated plastic or a liquid dye absorbs the ultraviolet light from a black light and then emits energy that can be viewed under the light as a soft glow. The color of a fluorescent material is usually very bright and unique. This makes fluorescents very well suited for fun entertainment settings.

One place where black lights are frequently used is in an indoor laser tag arena. The lights provide very controlled and limited illumination by causing areas of the floors and walls that are painted with fluorescent dye to glow. The controlled lighting maintains a competitive and futuristic atmosphere while also allowing players to see each other and any obstacles that are in the way. The lights do not interfere with the infrared signals that the laser tag guns use and are not strong enough to be harmful to the skin or eyes.

The black lights in a laser tag arena are usually paired with other types of lighting. Standard LED PAR38 lights can be used with strobe lights and other colored lights to create areas that are visually challenging. Fog machines and loud noises or music can complete the elements of the arena that make it fun and unique for players. Black lights are often featured in other areas of an entertainment center such as a bowling hall with fluorescent pins or a live performance that involves fluorescent clothing and props.
